Passion For Fashion: An Interview with Jaclyn Murphy Creater Of Luniac Style

Passion For Fashion: An Interview with Jaclyn Murphy Creater Of Luniac Style

It’s no secret that we here at Fashionista’s Travel are proudly from little Rhode Island and inside this great state we stumbled upon Luniac Style. What is Luniac Style you ask? Well it is the creation of Rhode Island’s own Jaclyn Murphy.

Here she creates accessories for fabulous women.  Some of her creations include headbands, earings, rings, and bracelets.  Not only can you buy her delicious collection online via Etsy but she has also managed to get Luniac Style into a few local shops throughout the ocean state.

We were lucky enough to interview Jaclyn and here’s what she had to say.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I don’t even know where to begin with this question. I’ve been asked it time and time again and each time I struggle with the answer. What I can say is that I am a dream driven girl. I believe that everything happens for a reason, and life can be a really amazing thing. I believe that you should learn something new, and constantly evolve from your past experiences… and live it up. I love to laugh, make crazy jokes, rap, make things, play dress up, and go out to dinner, not necessarily in that order.

When did you realize you wanted to become a designer?

I’ve always just “done it”. I’ve always had beads, and wire surround me, it wasn’t until more recently that I realized… hey I can do this for a living.

What is the best perk in being a designer?

The best part of being a designer is that I get to go to bed and wake up whenever I want. I am my own boss, and therefore I am able to make all decisions pertaining to my business. Also I’ve met some really great people along my journey so far. It’s kind of crazy to not be settled ina 9-5 job… it’s really exhilarating, (a little scary at times) and a total dream come true.

Where do you get your design inspiration?

My inspiration comes certainly, and most importantly from within. Designing and creating is something I actually NEED to do. It’s not an option. If I didn’t have the ability to do what I do, I would have a very big void in my life, and I would be a very sad little lady.

I am so attracted to sparkles, glitter and anything that shines. My colors are usually bold and there to make a statement. When I see a particular bead, or element, it has to POP out at me.

I’m also heavily influenced by my love for music. Something that I can really relate to, and move to especially, even when it’s just me and Henry (my beloved dog) in my studio. Music plays a really big part in my mood and my design aesthetic. … I can listen to anything and anyone.

A few of my go to faves are.. Beyonce, Adele, Amy Winehouse, Jay z, Joni Mitchell, John Legend, Estelle, Toots and the Maytals, Donna Summer (I sweat the 70’s!!!)… and the list goes on.

What fashion trends interest you the most?

My fashion and what I love change often, but, I love to see how everyone’s individual personality emerges in what they wear. I love Betsey Johnson’s fearlessness, Rachel Zoe’s utter amazingness in taste, and of course her new line. I will forever reference the sexiness and swag of the ladies of Sex and the City. After watching that show, my fashion sense and style has been forever enhanced and brought to a whole new level.

On a personal level.. I love long maxi dresses, faux fur vests, gorgeous splatters of accessories, high heels to the sky, and whimsical flowing hippy style shirts. Vintage finds have also become a personal mission!

Do you have a mentor?

I don’t really have a mentor per se, but I definitely am supported enormously by many close friends and family. Their encouragement, advice, love, and help have gotten me this far… LuniacStyle encompases a little piece of all of them.

What motivates you?

My dream. I told my dad a very long time ago that I would be very happy if I could live on a beach make and sell my jewelry. I’ve refined that dream a little, and need a little more than just a beach. The way I see it is, I am the happiest when I’m creating, and I only have this one life. I may as well make it into everything I want. That motivates me everyday, along with listening to Jay Z rap.

Who are some of your favorite designers?

I am over the moon with the amount of talent some local gals have. I of course love Betsey Johnson… but I’m more interested in the not so mainstream designers. At Style Week Providence I got a first hand look at the amazing creations of Brianna Moon and Nicole Lebreux. (BANANAS!). These two ladies, and their incredible creations made me smile from ear to ear, and that’s what it’s all about. I also love April Johnson and Christian Siriano (both from Project Runway).

How long does it usually take you to construct a piece?

It all really depends on if I’m “feeling it” or if I’m not really feeling inspired at that moment. A piece of mine could take anywhere from a half hour to a few days. I have to be in the right mood to create. I have to really want it. If not, it comes out awful, and I end up trashing it.

What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion is EVERYTHING. It’s how we choose to present ourselves to the outside world. It encompasses and expresses our individual personalities. It’s how we want others to see us at first glance. It can make us feel amazing at any time. Fashion is fun, and always makes a statement.

3 Magazines For Fashion And Style Fix

3 Magazines For Fashion And Style Fix

I will be the first to admit that magazines give me a lot of my ideas for blog posts and giveaways.  They can help get the creative juices flowing and thats nothing to be ashamed of. With magazine subscriptions being so cheap it makes for subscribing a breeze and easy on your wallet.

When I want to talk style, fashion, accessories I look no further then:

1. Allure Magazine: They consider themselves the beauty expert and I have to agree.

2. Marie Claire: This is my second favorite magazine. Not only does it give great fashion and style how to’s and advice But it also has my favorite column “Big Girl In A Skinny World” by Ashley Falcon. This is the magazine for woman in their late 20′s who are sick of reading “How do I know if he likes me.”

3. Glamour: Yes they still touch on “50 Sex Positions” but you can pick up a lot of great fashion tips, I’ve picked up quite a few that I’ve even gotten compliments on.

By reading each of these magazines you not only give yourself some new insight on fashion and style but you can also jump start your blog.  With in the blog niche of fashion it can often be hard, there is no shame and getting a little help.
